Lishan Blue Magpie
Our team #7589 Lishan Blue Magpie, was founded in 2018 by four teachers from Taipei Municipal Lishan High School with great passion about education and STEAM. After participating in the ICT Application Competition that year, one of our founding mentor, Hsin-Yi, Ho, asked the students if they would like to further pursue their interest in robotics.
"Would you like to do something bigger?"
Thus, the story of Lishan Blue Magpie unfolded.
We began our FRC journey in 2019, year one as an official FRC team, with a big vision and relentless dedication. Through hard work and a willingness not to let any opportunity slip away, we took home the Rookie All-Star Award at Central Vally Regional and were fortunate enough to experience the FIRST Championship in person in our very first year. Since then, we have grown steadily in both business and in engineering, expanding our team, deepening our love for robotics, and sharing our passion with broader audiences both within and beyond our community.
After previous seasons, we had enough resources to further pursue our dream of contributing to the community and sharing what we are passionate about. With the support of our sponsors, relatives, and alumni, we initiated our long-term outreach program, Feather Sessions, reaching students from elementary schools up to seniors in night schools. We also created a YouTube series, Goodnight, Magpie, to promote the culture of STEAM education by interviewing key figures in the field across Taiwan. Although the competition season was postponed until November due to the pandemic, we were honored to win the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Science Park Taichung 5G Pilot Regional.
In 2021, due to the pandemic, all competitions moved online, but we didn't give up; we gave it our all, discussing and designing our game for hundreds of hours. With our creation, Supply Rush, we were fortunate enough to be awarded the Engineering Design Award in the Game Design Challenge, which is one of six awards (including the Rookie Award) given in our division.
After COVID, we had difficulty passing down experience and knowledge while also trying to maintain the quality of our robot. In the meantime, our outreach program continued to grow and became one of our main focuses throughout the season. Even though we did everything we could and pushed ourselves in many ways, the 2022 season became more about gaining valuable knowledge and experience, lessons that would help us to go even further in the future seasons.
In 2023, we were still working on closing the experience and knowledge deficit that we left behind. While we tried to put what we had learned from the previous year into practice, not having enough juniors and seniors meant that this season focused more about gaining new concepts about the competition, defending and passing on knowledge from our alumni, and remaining in good connections with them.
After closing the gap, our team grew in many different areas: software, hardware, marketing, funding, and more. with our significant progress in engineering, we had the honor of working with three of the best teams in the world to form an alliance and capture the Central Valley Regional for the first time as Regional Winner, gaining us the entry ticket to the FIRST Championship. Aside from engineering, our major improvements in business department and our dedication to sharing our spirit and values with our community also earned us the Imagery Award in honor of Jack Kamen, marking the first year where we won two awards in one competition.
Seven years on, our operations have grown significantly since our founding, allowing us to pass down knowledge more easily and build stronger relationships with our alumni, both of which have helped significantly in terms of upgrading our engineering and business skills.
Unfortunately, despite all the progress we had this year, the odds were not in our favor. Finishing with a final ranking of 10, we were proud to be an alliance captain for the first time in team history, but sadly we did not make it onto the awards list. Still, the most valuable things we gain each year are not trophies, those are the knowledge, experience, and friendships we build along the way.
